There are any questions around what is asbestos and what to do if you suspect it in your home. Let me break some of these questions down for you.
What is asbestos?
Surprisingly, asbestos is a naturally occurring material used for many years within the construction industry. It was commonly used for building insulation, roofing, and was sprayed on ceilings and walls. However, as the years passed it became apparent that the tiny asbestos fibres when breathed into the lungs can have detrimental effects on our health. In 1999 it was banned from use within the UK, but buildings constructed before the year 2000 may still have asbestos in them.
What does asbestos look like?
There are three types of asbestos, which put in simple terms from me to help you identify them are blue, brown and white. From an official angle, these are called;
- Crocidolite
- Amosite
- Chrysotile
Now reading this you may think that if you spot something odd looking in the colours above its asbestos, simple to identify and remove. However, you’d be wrong in thinking so. Asbestos fibres and tiny, they can only be identified via a microscope. These fibres can be found in paint, cement, floor tiles, adhesives, insulations and cladding to name a few.
Here comes the tricky part, to the human eye all of these items just look like, well, what they are, paint, cement etc. Asbestos also doesn’t have a smell unlike other building materials, again making it difficult to identify.
How do I identify asbestos?
The only way you can identify asbestos safely and accurately is with an asbestos survey. This is where we here at Amianto Services can help you. A point you should also make note of if that if you suspect asbestos, an asbestos survey is a legal requirement under the Control of Asbestos Regulations.
